Profhilo vs. Fillers: The type of hyaluronic acid

The only similarity between dermal fillers and Profhilo is that they’re both made from hyaluronic acid which is injected into your tissues.

What are Dermal Fillers

Most dermal fillers are made of a substance called hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is found within our skin but depletes as we age and helps to maintain the moisture in our skin and aids regeneration. Additionally, hyaluronic acid behaves like a sponge, drawing and retaining up to 1,000 times its own weight in water; this means that the skin is plump, smooth, and hydrated.

However, hydration is not usually the main reason we treat the skin with hyaluronic dermal fillers. For filler treatments, the hyaluronic acid your practitioner uses comes in the form of a soft gel that is strategically placed with a fine needle.

Dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid gels that can come in different thicknesses, which are used to restore volume and definition to areas experiencing signs of ageing, such as cheeks and lips. These forms of stabilised injectable hyaluronic acid help plump ageing and sagging tissue as well as smooth out specific wrinkles such as nose-to-mouth lines.

Compared to Profhilo

Profhilo has a runnier hyaluronic acid (HA) consistency than dermal fillers and is injected only into the upper layers of skin to hydrate and have a ‘scaffolding’ anti-ageing effect within the skin, as well as improve the quality of your skin thanks to its ability to trigger bio-remodelling.

The Times beauty journalist, Olivia Falcon, describes it brilliantly: “Imagine your skin is a bed: rather than plumping up the pillows (the effect fillers have on the skin), Profhilo increases the thread count of the sheets (your skin).” Which in effect, ultimately reduces signs of ageing in your skin but also remodels the natural lift throughout your face.

Profhilo and Fillers work in different ways

Once the hyaluronic acid dermal fillers have been administered, the HA pretty much stays in the place it was injected (thank goodness, or else we could end up with questionable results!). But, this is actually the complete opposite of how Profhilo works. Once the Profhilo injections have delivered their 10 shots of hydration, the HA starts to disperse underneath the skin, spreading its moisturising magic across the whole face. This brings us to our next point…

Profhilo and Fillers: different treatment areas

During a dermal filler treatment, only specific areas of the face are targeted – like the cheeks, deep wrinkles and lips. And whilst you can go back and have multiple filler treatments, only one area is focused on at a time. But, Profhilo treatment isn’t restricted to just one place. What Profhilo actually does is plump, refresh and tighten the whole face.

The Profhilo and Fillers benefits are different

Whilst dermal fillers are used for altering the shape of facial features (goodbye, bumpy nose and hello, plump lips), replacing lost volume due to ageing and contouring, Profhilo doesn’t have any role in volumising or restructuring the face.

So, what is Profhilo used for? Think of it like this: Profhilo is like taking a really hydrating moisturiser and, instead of slathering it on top of your skin, injecting it into your skin, helping to make it supple and hydrated from the inside. So, it provides your skin with intense moisturisation and rejuvenation – and this is why it’s often referred to as injectable skincare. Who doesn’t like the sound of that?

Is Profhilo safe?

The treatment is biocompatible due to its pure grade hyaluronic acid which is free of additives, therefore reducing side effects and offering greater safety.

To date, over a million Profhilo treatments have been administered all over the world and nobody has had a serious reaction to the treatment.

Despite the incredibly high hyaluronic acid content, this slow-release treatment has a low inflammatory profile, pro-healing properties and is backed by clinical studies.

We’ll be releasing Profhilo soon, watch this space.
