How Does Botox® Actually Work?
This is really important to understand if you are considering having it done, so I hope this will help!
Muscles in your face contract and relax continually to allow you to carry out normal functions (such as eating or yawning) and facial expressions (such as frowning or raising your eyebrows). This continuous and sometimes excessive contraction eventually leads to the formation of wrinkles which unfortunately generally become more visible over time. In a nutshell, the more muscular activity and expressive you are, the faster the formation of folds and wrinkles.
Now the only way muscles can contract is if the nerves in the area send them messages to do so. These messages/signals are called neurotransmitters. Botox® is a naturally occurring bacterial protein and it simply works by blocking these nerve signals to the muscle. This in turn temporarily leads to less contraction of the muscle which has a two-fold effect:
- It lessens the formation of wrinkles for the future as the muscle is not contracting as much.
- It helps soften or sometimes even extinguish the appearance of existing lines and wrinkles.
A combination of both effects above aims to create a softer and more youthful appearance around the treated area. Botox® is a natural substance, so it will eventually be broken down by the body and you may need further treatment the fact that it is naturally broken down makes it very safe. The breakdown usually takes about 3-4 months but it can differ from person to person.
As Botox® is all about manipulating muscle activity, it is extremely important to have someone who knows the muscular anatomy of the face really well to place the substance in the exact right place and give you the best and safest result. This is where UNNDOO comes in!
