Brotox: Myths and Trends
“Admitting vanity does not make you weak”
We all look in the mirror and judge ourselves on how we look. Admit it. You do it too. I know I do. And it sucks. Getting old sucks. But looking old? That hurts.
According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, 2018 saw a drop in surgical cosmetic procedures, but a rise in the non-surgical ones. “Tweak not tuck” seems to be the trend amongst men.
Why are we seeing such a rise in the demand for non-surgical enhancements?
Social media and reality TV seem to be to driving force behind the popularity of men having non-surgical treatments in the UK. Not only is Botox for men available, it is on the rise. More and more men are looking to simple, effective, non-invasive methods of looking young and rejuvenated.
There should not be a pressure to look a certain way, but sadly there are stresses and strains: Friends, social status, climbing the work ladder, dating and relationships.
When used for the right reasons Botox can be a very ideal solution to treat the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles: a slight enhancement on appearance. It is also being used medically to treat migraines, tooth grinding and excess sweating.
What is it?
Botox in simplest of terms is a neurotoxin that reduces or stops muscle movements and as a result, reduces the ability of the skin to fold. There are always side effects and potential risks that need to be considered prior to having any treatment
Popularly dubbed “brotox”, it is considered a cosmetic procedure benefiting men seeing early signs of ageing.
Treatments usually take about 15 minutes and results tend to last about 4 months (although do vary). Men tend to require more product than women as skin is usually thicker and muscles are usually stronger in a male face.
There has always existed a stigma of men having Botox for fine lines and wrinkles, but this may change given the rise in popularity. However, choosing to take pride in one’s appearance and reducing the signs of ageing by picking suitable aesthetic treatments can keep appearances looking natural, yet fresh and revitalised.
The key thing is to carefully weigh up the costs and benefits of having such a procedure, and if you go ahead, select a suitably qualified and experienced aesthetic practitioner to guide you through your aesthetic journey. If you feel Botox is not the right thing for you, there are plenty of alternative skincare regimens that can be considered to help turn back the years on your appearance!
With social and professional demands upon today’s men, increased pressure on them to look good and shifting cultural attitudes towards male aesthetic procedures, the face of male non-surgical treatments looks set to continue its rapid evolution.
