The Top 3 Questions We’ve Been Asked In The Last 2 Months
What You Can Do After Your Botox Treatment
If you’re thinking of booking a Botox treatment or have booked a treatment, then you may be curious as to what you can and can’t do after. Here are the top things our clients have been asking our lovely practitioners…
- “When can I work out?” Because everyone is trying to get fit ready for the summer.
- “Can I travel after Botox?” Yup, we’ve seen those pictures of you sipping on cocktails at the Five Palm in Dubai or you’re living your best life skiing on the Swiss Alps.
- “Can I wear make-up after my Botox treatment?” Fair questions, as Botox is a minimally invasive treatment with low downtime.
Let’s give you the right medical advice…
Exercising After Botox
Guidance – Wait at least 24 hours.
As medical practitioners, we recommend that you wait at least 24 hours after Botox. Don’t worry you won’t lose any of your gains.
Here’s the science behind it…
Exercise in all forms, increases the blood circulation in your body, pumping it to all parts from your muscles, heart and skin. Exercising after Botox can reduce the effects of the treatment because of the increase in blood circulation which would result in potentially your blood might flush some of the botulinum away from the injection site and it could migrate to a different part of your face.
Sometimes when we lift weights, we can exert ourselves to put it simply you’ve seen the faces people make when they are trying to push themselves and again this can push the Botox to a different part of the face.
If you need your daily fix of exercising then you can still do a workout before your treatment but do leave a few hours in between your workout and your treatment as the same principles applies – with all that blood flowing around your body, you need a few hours for your body to settle down especially if you’ve gone for a long-run and are bit flush, you know when you go a little pink in the face.
Flying or Travelling After Botox
After a lengthy lockdown and with flying restrictions easing, the first thing that everyone is doing is planning that long-awaited holiday. Yes, we’re talking cocktails, beach, sunshine, good vibes with good people. Tickets and hotel are booked, ASOS order has been placed and now you’re thinking, ‘I need to get rid of my lines and wrinkles, so those Instagram posts are on-point’. It’s cool, we’ve all been there. Next step book in a Botox treatment with UNNDOO but wait, ‘is it safe to travel after Botox?’.
Guidance – It is safe to travel after your Botox treatment.
Our medically qualified practitioners recommend waiting 24-48 hours before flying in case of minor side effects such as bruising, swelling and redness.
Our practitioners suggest avoiding exercise, excessive heat and alcohol for up to a couple of days after your treatment and as you want to enjoy your holiday it’s best to wait for a little.
We would recommend that you book your treatment around 2.5 weeks before you fly out. Here’s how the timeline works out:
2.5 weeks out
Treatment booked in the comfort of your home.
2 weeks out
Treatment starts to take effect.
1 week to go
You can book a complimentary top-up appointment (find out more here) with the same practitioner; this is so that we can make sure you’re happy with your treatment and can give you a tweak (a little more Botox) to make sure you get the look you want. Nothing makes us happier than knowing you look great for your holiday.
0.5 week out
Tweak/review appointment booked in and your set!
No matter what, our practitioners will always go through all after-care instructions including any potential side-effects and risks, so you know exactly what to expect. You’ll also receive an email with these as a reminder.
What About Skiing?
Can skiing be classed as exercise? You can’t get away with that one, so yes, the same principles apply with skiing as they do with exercise. Also, in this case, as it’s best not to touch your face for a couple of days, putting on a ski mask will certainly add pressure to your treatment area.
Wearing Makeup After Botox
Our regular clients know that the average appointment can take around 30 minutes, the perfect amount of time to get a Botox treatment in and still have time for lunch. But with offices reopening, can you put on your make up after and head back into the office?
Guidance – There’s nothing wrong with it but it’s best to wait.
The reason why it’s best to wait is because straight after your treatment the injection sites would not have closed straight away and there may be a little redness still there.
But if you must, we recommend waiting for 4 hours until the small injection site closes. After that, you may use some light mineral makeup to cover any bruising or swelling on the site.
Most individuals who get Botox injections experience mild redness for up to 24 hours after treatment. This is a normal event and, in most cases, subsides within a few hours.
The issue with applying makeup after your Botox treatment is that you’ll need to touch your face in order to apply the makeup. We advise our clients not to touch their face where they have had injections for at least 4-6 hours. Ideally, avoid touching the injection site areas for 24 hours (except to gently wash your face).
Since the Botox is sitting right under the skin inside of the facial muscles, touching or pressing on the area can force the Botox to spread further than it needs to go and it can spread to nearby muscles and structures. This can result in potential side effects.
The other issue with makeup application is that you would need to apply the foundation using a brush, cosmetic sponge, or your fingers, all of which carry bacteria. Since your skin will have small puncture wounds from where the needle entered your skin, this is a potential entry point for bacteria to get into your body.
If bacteria enter the wounds, it can cause a serious skin infection. Take care to allow the wounds to naturally close up.
Many of our clients get their injections done after work or on a Friday afternoon so they can go “makeup-free” for the recommended amount of time.
On a final note, for the safest and best possible treatment, only book appointments with a medically qualified practitioner.
